Just book with these guys, they are the best and I work in the industry! Had an amazing trip with Explorers Passage. Everyone from the start was so friendly and courteous and this got even better when we arrived in Chile. Guides, drivers and hotel staff were out of the world.
Couple this with the stunning scenery and it’s one of my top vacation ever!”

“Explorer’s Passage made our W trek adventure not only possible but seamless and amazing. It was clear from the start that they had thought of everything – from the transfers to tickets to gear. We were very prepared from all their detailed checklists and training guide. And we knew what to expect from all our pre-trip calls and emails. The level of detail in all they do is remarkable. We were able to enjoy the adventure that much more because we had so much trust in their guidance as well as execution of all those details.”

“My wife and I just got back from Patagonia after completing the W Trek that Explorers Passage had arranged for us. From our first contact with Jeff Bonaldi to our last transfer, our experience was stellar. Jeff guided us through the rather complicated logistics and was very responsive to concerns before and during the adventure. His focus was always on how to make the adventure memorable not on the bottom line for his company. I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to do so because our experience was beyond 5 stars.”

The Ship

The Explorer

Inaugurated in 2008, The Explorer is the world’s ultimate expedition ship. Her design and equipment is the result of almost 200 years of collective expedition experience.

Originally built for service along Norway’s coast as part of the famed Hurtigruten, or Coastal Express, her excellent maneuverability and just-right size made her a natural choice for addition to our fleet. Drawing on our nearly 50 years of pioneering expedition history and expertise, we completely redesigned and rebuilt her. The Explorer is uniquely equipped with an ice-strengthened hull and advanced navigation equipment for polar expeditions; a roster of tools for exploration; and a well-appointed interior with vast expanses of glass for an unprecedented connection to the regions we explore. She provides a peerless expedition cruise trip.

At 367 feet with six decks, she is spacious and modern, with a variety of public rooms that offer startling views of the passing landscape. Friendly and informal, Explorer instantly fosters a welcoming environment where enthused and curious passengers share in exceptional experiences and enrichment.

Her public rooms include a dramatic window-lined library and observation lounge perched at the very top of the ship, plentiful observation decks (including easy access to the bow), and the forward facing chart room, offering a 24-hour beverage station. The spacious lounge is the heart of our expedition community, and is suited for spirited cocktail hours, informative presentations and our nightly tradition of Recap. Our dining room and adjacent bistro easily accommodate all guests at once for open seating dining.

While Explorer’s interiors are certainly elegant, life aboard is always casual, with no need for formal clothing. And you’ll find shipboard services like a state-of-the-art fitness center, laundry and public-area wifi make packing and traveling more convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Svalbard is an Arctic archipelago located in the Barents Sea, about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. It is part of Norway, and its largest island is Spitsbergen. The archipelago is known for its rugged, icy landscapes and its remote location, making it a unique destination for Arctic adventures.

Summer (June to August): Ideal for experiencing the Midnight Sun, where the sun does not set for several weeks, and for exploring the archipelago’s natural beauty, including wildlife and glaciers.

Winter (December to February): Best for witnessing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and engaging in winter activities such as dog sledding and snowmobiling. The polar nights offer a chance to see the Arctic sky illuminated by the Aurora.

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November): These shoulder seasons provide fewer crowds and offer unique opportunities for wildlife viewing and dramatic Arctic landscapes.

Most visitors fly into Longyearbyen, the largest settlement on Svalbard. Direct flights are available from Oslo and Tromsø in Norway. The flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen typically takes around 3 hours. From Longyearbyen Airport, local transportation options, including taxis and shuttle services, can take you to your accommodation or embarkation point for Arctic tours.

Expect cold temperatures year-round, with winter temperatures often below freezing and summer temperatures ranging from just above freezing to about 10°C (50°F). The region experiences Polar Day (Midnight Sun) during summer when the sun does not set for several weeks, and Polar Night during winter when the sun does not rise for several weeks. Weather can be unpredictable with snow, wind, and fog. It’s important to be prepared for changing conditions.

Svalbard is one of the best places to see polar bears in the wild. These magnificent animals are often spotted on ice floes or the shores. Arctic foxes and Reindeer are commonly seen in the tundra and coastal areas. Look for seals, walruses, and occasionally whales such as belugas and minke whales. Svalbard is home to a variety of seabirds, including puffins, kittiwakes, and Arctic terns.

Join guided tours to observe polar bears, seals, and other Arctic wildlife. Explore glaciers through boat tours or hiking excursions. Enjoy thrilling rides across snow-covered landscapes. Witness the Aurora Borealis during the winter months. Explore stunning ice caves and tunnels formed by glaciers.

Layered clothing is essential. Pack thermal underwear, insulated jackets, waterproof outer layers, gloves, hats, and scarves. Sturdy, insulated, and waterproof boots are necessary for walking on snow and ice. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm to protect against sun glare and windburn. If you plan to photograph wildlife and landscapes, include a good camera, extra batteries, and memory cards.

Medical facilities in Svalbard are limited, so ensure you have appropriate travel insurance that covers Arctic conditions and emergency evacuation if necessary. Follow safety guidelines provided by guides and tour operators regarding cold weather exposure and outdoor activities. Comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended to cover potential medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events.
