Theodore Roosevelt & My Mount Marcy Adventure
A few years back in the middle of winter, I hiked up Mount Marcy during a snowstorm. For those of you who don’t know, Mount Marcy is the highest peak in the state of New York standing at 5,343 feet (1,629 meters). It is situated in the stunningly beautiful Adirondack Mountains just a few miles outside Lake Placid.
With crampons and snowshoes, we set off on the 18-mile (29-kilometer) roundtrip trail with only a few feet of visibility because of the heavy snowfall. As we neared the summit, the snow pack was so deep that we were only able to see the top of the evergreen trees. Eventually, we reached the mountain summit. The snow stopped, the sky opened up, and we could see dozens of Adirondack peaks for miles away.
Later that night at a local tavern in Lake Placid, we learned that there was a bit of famous history about Mount Marcy. On September 12th, 1901, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was hiking with a party on the mountain when a courier notified him that President McKinley’s health situation had deteriorated due to a gun shot wound sustained a week earlier. Later that same night, President McKinley passed away making Theodore Roosevelt President of the United States. Knowing this bit of history made our adventure even more special.
